OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND OF SUNGAI SELANGOR WATER SUPPLY SCHEME PHASE 1 (SSP1)

Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) is the concessionaire for the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 1 (SSP1). Awarded the concession on January 24, 2000, SPLASH undertakes the operations, maintenance and management of SSP1.

Brief History

The Sungai Selangor was identified as a potential source for water supply in the 1960s. It was the ultimate and largest undeveloped source of water supply available within the Selangor State. A comprehensive study and master plan, completed in 1986, recommended the development of the Sungai Selangor source as a regulating reservoir scheme whereby controlled releases are made from impounding reservoirs to supplement run-of-river abstraction during periods of dry weather and deficient river flows.

The study revealed that the development of the Sungai Selangor basin would yield additional 3000MLD of water supply satisfying demand needs to the year 2010 and beyond.

The State government then proceeded to implement the development of the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 1 (SSP1) that includes the construction of the Sungai Tinggi dam in early 1990. SSP1 was completed in 1995 providing an output capacity of 950 mld of treated water to serve demand areas in Northern Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

The Implementation of SSP1

  • An intake and raw water pumping station on the left bank of the Sungai Selangor, located 1 km upstream of Batang Berjuntai

  • Treatment works located 5km from intake works at Bukit Badong Estate

  • Balancing reservoir at Matang Pagar (186 ml) and Bukit Mayong Reservoir (23 ml)

SPLASH is responsible for taking raw water from Sg Selangor, treating it at the water treatment works in Bukit Badong and supplying the treated water to balancing reservoirs at Matang Pagar and Bukit Mayong. It also includes regular monitoring and checks on equipment and water quality, upgrading and repair works to ensure reliable supply of high quality water to residents and industries in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur.
