Works for SSP3 is entering its third year of construction and is 5 months ahead of schedule. SSP3 is being developed as part of a bigger, future long-term water resource plan for Selangor and Klang Valley. SSP3 has been awarded to Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) by the Selangor State Government to meet water supply demand beyond 2003.
The Sungai Selangor Dam is a crucial part of the SSP3 that will provide additional water supply for 2 million residents and industries in Selangor and Klang Valley. Works on building the dam commenced in the third quarter of 2000 and now has achieved 50% completion which is 5 months ahead of schedule. The dam construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year and impounding is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2003.
The first phase of Rasa Water Treatment Plant which was scheduled to be completed in January 2002 was completed two months ahead and started operations in November 2001. The treatment plant is able to supply an additional 125 million litres per day (mld) of water to areas in and around Ulu Bernam and Batang Kali. The second phase of the Rasa Water Treatment Plant is scheduled to start soon.
The completion of Rasa Water Treatment Plant has helped the State Government to better manage their water resources by diverting treated water from Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 1 (SSP1) and Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 2 (SSP2) to other parts of Klang Valley leaving the northern parts to be supplied from Rasa Water Treatment Plant.
Works on other components of SSP3 is also progressing smoothly. The first phase of Bukit Badong Water Treatment Plant is at 60% completion. The first phase of 400 mld of water is targeted to complete by third quarter of 2003 and another 400 mld by second quarter of 2005
The new Kg. Pertak has also been completed and the 43 Orang Asli families of Kg. Pertak community have settled into their new village last month. 41 families of Kg. Gerachi have already moved into their new village earlier in June 2001.
When fully complete by 2005, SSP3 will comprise a regulating dam in Kuala Kubu Bharu, with a capability to store 235 million cubic metres of water, the Rasa Water Treatment Plant with 250 mld capacity and the Bukit Badong Water Treatment Plant with 800 mld capacity. Together they will supply an additional 1, 050 mld to Selangor and the Federal Territory. With the completion of SSP3, SPLASH will be the biggest water producer in the state of Selangor.
SPLASH has also given their commitment to take every effort to ensure that the project will be conducted in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner in providing additional clean treated water for the state of Selangor through SSP3.
