Kuala Kubu Bharu, 7 June 2001

DYMM Tengku Idris Shah Ibni Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, Pemangku Raja Selangor presents 41 Kg Gerachi families with new homes and community facilities

DYMM Pemangku Raja Selangor presented 41 families of Kg Gerachi with new homes and a new village at the Officiating Ceremony of Kg Gerachi Jaya this morning. In a ceremony held at their new village, DYMM Pemangku Raja Selangor declared their new village `Kampung Gerachi Jaya' and presented the key to their new village to Tok Batin Ramsit, the village headman.

Witnessed by Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir bin Toyo, Dato' Menteri Besar of Selangor, State Government Officials, District Agencies and Officers, the handing over ceremony culminates months of preparation and anticipation to shift into a modern new village.

Kg Gerachi Jaya was built by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) as part of the resettlement and compensation package under Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 3 (SSP3) to relocate and resettle 41 families of Kg Gerachi into new homes .

This morning's ceremony is a significant achievement for the Selangor State Government as the resettlement of Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak is a major exercise in the implementation of SSP3. Great pains were taken to ensure that the resettlement will be carried out successfully and to the satisfaction of both the Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak communities. A Resettlement Committee was set up to look into a detailed programme and to ensure that the communities will enjoy improved and better homes and community facilities.

Each family receives a 3-bedroom house on a 1-acre plot of land, water and electricity supply, land title, a RM500 shifting allowance, oil palm plantation and RM250 monthly subsidy until their oil palm crop matures and community facilities comprising balai gerakan, surau, community hall, clinic, tadika and shoplots.

'The handing over ceremony this morning marks the successful shifting in of the 41 families into their new village." Encik Azmi Mat Nor, Chief Executive Officer of Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) said.

"As concessionaire, we were determined that in fulfilling the resettling programme for Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak, that we resettle them to their satisfaction and that they will be happy and comfortable with their new homes surroundings. Our purpose was to provide them with new and better homes and an improved quality of life." Encik Azmi added.

After the ceremony, the families escorted DYMM Raja Pemangku Selangor on a tour of their new village

Follow-up familiarisation programmes are being implemented for the families. "Our aim is to also bring them to the mainstream, so they can be part of a developing society. Apart from providing them with their new homes and their new village, we have also initiated familiarisation and briefing sessions to help them learn how to adapt to a modern way of living." Encik Azmi said of the many programmes and activities organised for them prior the shifting.

"The families participated in briefing and practical activities such as Taklimat Rumah Sempurna sessions, safety and fire drills and gotong royong sessions. More of these sessions will be held for them until they are totally comfortable in their new surroundings." he said.

Encik Azmi also added that in addition to these, SPLASH had for the past year been implementing their Community Development Programme for Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak with the purpose of helping to develop them through skills and job training and providing them with job opportunities.

"With this, they will be able to hold a steady job and earn a better livelihood and thereby better their standard of living. Our objective is to help develop them for the long term." he explained.

With Kg Gerachi successfully relocated, SPLASH is now working towards completing the new Kg Pertak by end year. 43 families of Kg Pertak are expected to move in to their new homes and village by early 2002.
