Focus on importance of water usage and water conservation at SSP1 Open Day in conjunction with World Water Day

1000 visitors learnt about the water treatment process during an Open Day visit and exhibition at the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 1 (SSP1) at Bukit Badong in conjunction with World Water Day recently.

Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) organised the Open Day as part of their educational activities to teach the young on the importance of water usage, water conservation and preservation. School children from 6 schools were given a tour of the treatment plant and also participated in quizzes and colouring contests.

"We want the younger generation to realise the importance of water as a life source and that if we do not take care of the water we have, we may run out of water one day." Encik Azmi Mat Nor, Chief Executive Officer of SPLASH said of the objectives for the Open Day.

"We also need for the public, especially the young, to know that water is a finite resource and that each of us has a part to play in managing and preserving our freshwater sources, so that these will remain clean and sufficient for us to be able to treat into water for our every household use." he stressed.

Encik Azmi also spoke of a greater need to curb river pollution and protect our water catchments and watersheds to preserve our water sources and our eco-systems. Developments and activities around catchment areas would also have to be curtailed to achieve an effective water management programme.

"All these are crucial factors to ensure that our water supply will be able to cater for an increasing population and industrial growth in Selangor and to ensure that we will always have water for our future generations." he said.

SSP1 is managed and operated by SPLASH and produces 950 mld of water, among the largest capacities in Selangor at the moment. Part of the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme, SSP1 and SSP3 (producing 1,050 mld when fully complete in 2005) will provide for a total of 2,000 mld of water to Selangor and the Klang Valley. SPLASH also holds the concession to build, operate and manage SSP3.
