20 Orang Asli from the Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak communities in Hulu Selangor will become CIDB certified skilled workers in the construction industry by this year as they are being assessed by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

Today's first batch of 8 Orang Asli is being assessed on excavator operations for which they were trained last year. Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) had in its Community Development Programme put them through a 2-month excavator operations training programme at the Gamuda Plant Operator School (GPOS) in Shah Alam.

A total of 24 was trained and provided with jobs as assistant excavator operators at the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 3 (SSP3). The CIDB assessment is the second stage of the skills development programme and will certify the trainees as skilled construction workers with Certificates of Competency.

This pioneer number of 20 will also become the only group of skilled Orang Asli in the construction industry. With the CIDB accreditation, they will be able to apply for jobs as excavator operators in the industry anywhere in the country.

Today's batch of 8 trainees was assessed on both theory and practical and was asked to demonstrate their excavating skills. In addition to these 8, another 12 will also be assessed after they have gone through the required 7 months work experience at the SSP3 worksite. The criteria for CIDB assessment is that the trainee undergo 6 - 7 months practical work before they can be assessed.

The 8 are Rizal Bin Ching, Karano Bin Sen, Ton Bin Gamat, Meli A/L Jabat, Isa Bin Kising, Acim Bin Kising, Taha Bin Wong and Rosli Bin Bidar.

The SPLASH Community Development Programme is SPLASH's commitment to help develop the Orang Asli community with job skills and provide them with jobs as a means of self-sustenance. This is to help provide them with opportunities for increased income and a better standard of living beyond their traditional crop cultivation.

24 Orang Asli, from both Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak were trained as assistant excavator operators at GPOS from February to August last year.

All 24 were provided jobs as assistant excavator operators at the SSP3 worksite. To date, 20 are still working as operators at the worksite. Apart from these 20 trained workers, 16 others are also employed and hold positions as chainmen, flagmen, general workers, cleaners, watchmen and liaison officers at the worksite.

SPLASH is continuing with its Orang Asli Development Programme with skills training for the womenfolk of Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak this year. Details of the training in sewing, cooking, hairdressing and handicraft will be finalised soon.
