Y.A.B. Datin Zaharah bt. Kechik, wife to Dato' Menteri Besar Selangor, and Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) brought Deepavali cheer to the children from Shelter Home in Petaling Jaya.
The 71 children from 4 different Shelter Homes in Selangor were in high-spirit despite the afternoon downpour to greet Datin Zaharah and her entourage on the eve of Deepavali.
The programme started off with a moving and interesting dance and song performance by the children followed by a slide presentation and a visit of the home.
Shelter is a registered welfare organisation that began its services in 1981 working with a group of difficult children. The organisation has since expanded to 5 Shelter homes and provide a wide range of services, home, care, vocational training and counselling to troubled, abused and neglected children between the age of 2 to 17 years.
The younger children below 12 years are housed in Shelter 1 in Petaling Jaya while the older girls are housed in two different housed in Kuala Lumpur and Kajang. The older boys are housed in Batu Arang.
Shelter 5 in Petaling Jaya is the counselling centre. Shelter Home has plans to open another home, Shelter 6, that will cater to caring and training of delinquent boys.
Datin Zaharah gave out Deepavali greetings and money packets to all the children and food hampers to the individual homes.
Both the children and guest enjoyed the pizza feast prepared at the end of the visit. Many of the children took the opportunity to get close and personal with Datin Zaharah during the tea reception.
"It is nice to see the smiles and laughter on the children faces. SPLASH has planned a series of visits to welfare homes in Selangor and will continue with its community service programme to cheer up the less fortunate," said En Azmi Mat Nor, Chief Executive Officer of SPLASH.
