Community Development Programme By SPLASH Produces Pioneer Orang Asli Group Trained In Construction Skills
26 August 2000 | Category: Orang Asli
24 Orang Asli from Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak have achieved pioneer status as the first group of Orang Asli trained and qualified in construction skills handling. All 24 have been trained by SPLASH in excavator handling operations and are already working for the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 3.
In a ceremony this morning at Kuala Kubu Bharu, the final batch of 10 Orang Asli received their Certificates of Completion and Letters for Employment from SPLASH. The training programme for the 24 started since February this year and is part of SPLASH's community development programme initiated to develop self-growth and job skills, thereby enabling them to improve their standard of living.
This job training is a major component of a development programme to provide them with the means for a more secured future and a steady income. The training, held at Gamuda Plant Operator School (GPOS), Shah Alam, taught them excavator operations handling and they will be awarded with a CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board) Certificate of Competency by November of this year.
"With this Certificate of Competency, they are qualified to work in the construction industry anywhere in the country. At the moment, all 24 are employed at assistant excavator operators at the SSP3 worksite." Encik Azmi Mat Nor, Chief Executive Officer of SPLASH said.
Encik Azmi added "As a socially responsible company, we see that community development and education is important if we seriously want to help develop and make a real difference in the socio-economic development of our communities.
Education is the foundation to self-development and progress. We believe in helping to develop our community by providing them the means for a better future. Which is why our emphasis in our social responsibility commitment is community development and education."
Elaborating on the training and education programmes for the Orang Asli, Encik Azmi said that SPLASH is in the final process of awarding scholarships to 5 Orang Asli for higher education in Selangor.
Public education, especially educating the young, is also an on-going process the company is undertaking. In a recent children education campaign, schoolchildren participated in quizzes, essay writing and drawing & colouring contests while learning about the importance of water and water conservation.
Winners of both the contests were also present at the ceremony to receive their prizes. 30 winners, 20 for the drawing & colouring contest and 10 for the essay contest, received cash prizes of RM1000, (1st prize) RM800, (2nd prize) RM500 (3rd prize) and RM100 (consolation prizes).
